Is writing a business?

For some reason, many authors do not consider themselves to be in business. This is a mystery.

  • The Merriam-Webster dictionary says the meaning of business is, “the activity of making, buying, or selling goods or providing services in exchange for money.” Selling books, even one book, is considered selling goods. Selling books, even one book, requires bookkeeping, sales tax collection and accountability—to state, city and county. 
  • Perhaps an author is doing business in a name other than her own. This would require the filing of a fictitious name form with the Secretary of State.

  • The Internal Revenue Service recognizes a home based business as a legitimate business and allows income tax deductions under certain conditions. 
  • If a book is traditionally published, there is a contract, perhaps an advance, royalties, the purchase of wholesale books for resale and possibly other business transactions. 
  • If a book is self-published, there is a contract, payment for services, shipping, and other business expenses.

The summary of these facts, do indeed, offer proof that an author is in business regardless of personal opinion.
